A Note From the Owner
My Pilates journey started in the mid 1990’s when I pulled a muscle in my back. I knew my body needed a more intelligent way to exercise. After browsing through several books, I found a book on Pilates. Although not the best way to begin a Pilates program, I started my own home routine. I quickly came to the realization I had found a movement system I could use throughout my life and I began pursuing teacher training. That simple beginning of seeking an effective fitness program eventually turned into an avenue to rehabilitate my body after sustaining nerve damage during the birth of my second child.
What neither my doctor or I knew at that time, was that my pelvis was misshapen as a result of being hit by a drunk driver when I was five years old. Up to that point, I was unaware that the accident had altered my pelvis to the point that childbirth was not something my pelvis could handle. The trauma caused by the delivery created the nerve damage and subsequent SI Joint Dysfunction. My journey since that day has changed my perception of Pilates as not just a form of mind/body fitness but a way to reclaim my muscle function from nerve damage and help re-align my pelvis from SI Joint Dysfunction.
Movement had always been a part of my life, which is why I studied exercise science and cardiac rehabilitation for my undergraduate degree. However, the injuries from childbirth led me to pursue my master’s degree. I wanted to understand my own body better and be able to take that knowledge to further help my clients. I am pleased that this knowledge has allowed me to network with local Physical Therapists and Physicians, many of whom are clients, who refer people to Lakeshore Pilates for not just overall fitness but also for post-rehabilitation. We welcome people of all fitness and health levels to the studio. Our team of competent instructors look forward to working with you.
Sincerely,
Heather Dibkey
